Finally getting fit on two wheels: your cycling training kick-off in Graz!
So, have you caught the spring fever yet and fancy finally getting properly into cycling training? Great! Right now, in April 2026, is the perfect time to hit the cycle paths of Graz and do something for your fitness. Don’t worry, you don’t have to conquer the Mount Everest of Styria straight away (and certainly not the Schlossberg – that’s off-limits for us cyclists anyway!). We’ll start off nice and easy.
The basics for a successful start
Forget the pressure to perform! At the start, it’s all about developing a routine and having fun. Here are a few tips on how best to get started in Graz:
- Consistency is key: it’s better to cycle for 30 minutes three times a week than for two hours once a month. Your body adapts better to the strain if it’s consistent.
- Start gently: Your best friend at the start is the Murradweg. Flat, lovely, and you can concentrate fully on your pace. Perfect for getting a feel for the bike and building up your stamina. Imagine cycling leisurely from the main square towards the south or north and enjoying the fresh air.
- Build up slowly: Once the 30 minutes feel easy, just add another 5 or 10 minutes. Or try cycling a little bit faster. But always at a pace where you could still have a chat (talk test!).
- Listen to your body: Sore muscles are fine, but pain is a warning sign. Treat yourself to rest days! Your body needs time to recover and get stronger.
- Warm-up and cool-down: A few minutes of gentle cycling at the start and end help prevent injuries and aid recovery.
- Venture onto your first little hills: Once you feel confident on the Murradweg, you can tackle some small climbs. The Plabutsch, for example, offers lovely, gentle paths at its foot that are perfect for your first few metres of elevation gain without immediately overwhelming you.
- Don’t forget fluids and snacks: Especially now that temperatures are rising, staying hydrated is super important. And for longer rides – a small muesli bar or a banana can work wonders.
The great thing about cycling in Graz is that you can find little adventures everywhere. Whether you’re just popping out for a quick spin after work or planning a longer trip at the weekend – enjoy the exercise and the fresh air.
So, grab your bike, adjust the saddle properly and off you go! See you on the trails!
